About Securities Commission Malaysia

The SC oversees Malaysia’s capital market: shares, bonds, sukuk, unit trusts, derivatives and the Islamic capital market. Anyone who deals in securities, manages funds or gives investment advice in Malaysia needs an SC licence or registration.

What it does

  • Licenses and supervises capital market intermediaries such as stockbrokers, fund managers and investment advisers.
  • Supervises the exchanges, clearing houses and central depository.
  • Registers prospectuses, approves corporate bond and sukuk issues, and regulates takeovers and mergers.
  • Makes and enforces the rules under the Securities Commission Malaysia Act 1993, the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007 and the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991.

Can you rely on it?

Yes. The SC is the statutory regulator of Malaysia’s capital market, created by an Act of Parliament and answerable to the Minister of Finance. Its list of licensed and registered persons is the authoritative record of who may deal in securities in Malaysia, and its Investor Alert List names unlicensed entities and schemes it has flagged. Check both before you invest.
